RSW Regional Jail Overview
RSW Regional Jail, also described as Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail, is operated by the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail Authority. It is the primary jail facility for Rappahannock County, even though the building sits in Warren County. RSW's official site states that it serves Rappahannock, Shenandoah, and Warren Counties. The facility holds adults remanded from those counties, including pretrial detainees, locally sentenced inmates, state-responsible inmates awaiting transfer, and other contracted local or regional holds when applicable.
The jail opened in July 2014. RSW's official facility information says the building initially had capacity for 375 inmates and covers about 175,000 gross square feet. It includes cells and dormitories, food service, laundry, intake and release, medical services, recreation and education space, central storage, visitation, magistrate functions, administration, and staff services. The initial staffing plan was about 149 employees in the building each day across the 24-hour facility.
RSW describes its mission as protecting the people of the Commonwealth from people remanded into custody while providing humane confinement. The jail says staff use direct-supervision principles and provide academic and life-skills programs plus substance-abuse counseling and education.
RSW Regional Jail Capacity
RSW's sourced facility statistics are building-level and regional. The research did not locate a current public dashboard showing the daily Rappahannock County share of RSW's population. The verified capacity number is the initial 375-inmate capacity published by RSW. Because RSW serves three counties, that number should not be described as a Rappahannock-only jail population.
The official RSW facility-information page is the source for the capacity, opening, building-size, and support-space details.
The facility page is a useful source because it explains why the Rappahannock County jail search points to a regional facility in Front Royal.
Lookup RSW Regional Jail Inmates
Use the official RSW JailTracker/Public Safety Cloud locator for current custody. The locator is linked by RSW and is the correct starting point for Rappahannock County inmates held at the regional jail. It should not be treated as a full charge sheet because RSW states that charge-related information is no longer accessible through the inmate locator as of July 1, 2026.
- Open the RSW inmate locator from the official RSW site or the direct Public Safety Cloud URL.
- Search by last name first, then add first name if needed.
- Complete CAPTCHA if the locator requires it.
- Use any result to confirm custody, identity, and jail status where shown.
- Search Virginia Court Case Information for charge data, court dates, and case status.
- Call RSW Booking if online search does not match what an arresting agency or court told you.
For sentenced state custody, use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. For federal prisoners, use the BOP locator. For immigration custody, use the official ICE detainee locator. For custody notifications, use Virginia VINE.
RSW Regional Jail Contact
RSW publishes a main jail phone line and several department lines. Use booking for immediate custody and release questions. Use records for jail records questions. Use inmate accounts for canteen and money issues. The Rappahannock County Sheriff's Office remains the local law-enforcement contact, but it is not the jail visitation or inmate account office.

Visit RSW Regional Jail
RSW's visitation page says the jail no longer uses iWebVisit and tells users to use Paytel. The inspected page did not publish a complete public day-and-time schedule, so no day-by-day hours should be invented. Attorney and professional communication rules appear separately on the RSW attorney communication page, and professional users should verify current procedures with RSW.
| Visit type | Schedule / access | Source note |
|---|---|---|
| Public/family video visitation | Use Paytel | RSW states Paytel replaced iWebVisit for normal visitation. |
| Attorney/professional communication | Professional rules and contacts listed by RSW | Confirm current scheduling before the visit. |
| Lobby/on-site access | Current public visitor hours not fully published in captured text | Call the jail before travel. |
Bring government identification and avoid extra personal property. Jail entry is controlled by the facility, and current visit access can change based on security or operational needs.
RSW Regional Jail Mail Money
RSW uses a mail-scanning process for regular incoming mail. Non-legal mail, except legal mail and money orders, goes to a processing center in Greensboro, North Carolina, not to the jail street address. The envelope must include the inmate's name, inmate ID number, and facility ID 5258. Mail is screened and then sent to the inmate's tablet.
| Service | Provider / detail | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Regular mail | RSW Regional Jail VA, P.O. Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419 | Include inmate full name, inmate ID, and facility ID 5258. |
| Legal mail | RSW Regional Jail, 6601 Winchester Road, Front Royal, VA 22630 | Mark as legal mail; do not send to the processing center. |
| Lobby kiosk | RSW main lobby | Available 24/7; fees apply. |
| Online deposits | JailATM.com | Fees apply. |
| Money order by mail | Inmate Accounts Clerk at RSW physical address | Cash and checks are not accepted. |
| Phone and messaging | Paytel | Families can use Paytel or 1-800-PAY-TELL. |
The RSW mail policy shows the scanned-mail process and the Greensboro processing address.
The mail screenshot is included because the Greensboro address and facility ID are easy to miss when families expect all mail to go to Front Royal.
RSW Regional Jail Booking
A Rappahannock County arrestee who is not released by an officer, magistrate, or court is generally transported to RSW.
